Going Green last Christmas (8layertech Christmas Party 2011)
While other companies busy themselves celebrating the Christmas season with lavish, extravagant and noisy parties, we – the 8liens, have opted once again to celebrate the glorious occassion in our ‘own unique and meaningful way.’
December 28 of 2011 was another greata and memorable day for each and everyone of us. Early morning of that day we left for Calamba, Laguna all enveloped with smiles and excitement.
Armed with bolos, shovels, hoes and bamboo sticks, we trooped to a creek behind the Modern Village Subdivision, trekked its rugged slopes, and wrestled the cogon grasses… with one unanimous mission: to plant narra and bignay seedlings along the banks of the said creek
After four-hour of sweating under the heat of the sun and of fun and adventure, we were able to plant and set firmly on the creek sides, spanning around 200 meters, the 50 seedlings. Everyone was tired, yet no amount of material wealth can compensate to the inner fulfillment and happiness that everyone felt. The feeling – that you have done something for our environment. That you have done your share, no matter how small it is, in restoring our depleting natural resources. And that you have done something significant to our planet.
Christmas is indeed a season of giving – of sharring our time, our talent, and our treasure to our loved ones and to the less-privileged. But for 8liens, the meaning transends far beyond. It’s also a n opportune occasion to share our time with our environmet, our Mother earth. Chirstmas is a journey with God in caring for his wondrous and beautiful creation.

TweetAdding a dash of Mint on my freshly squeezed KahelOS
I’m such an “eventous” person and because today is Rizal Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rizal_Day and 2012 is just around the corner let me just add to my KahelOS[1] experimentation before i wrap up my 2011.
Guess what, I tried installing Linux Mint[2] desktop environment called Cinnamon[3] on my KahelOS 111111. They say that this desktop is designed to offer yet another transitional option between the old, familiar GNOME 2 and the new GNOME 3 on which its new version 1.1.2 just released before Christmas http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?p=53
And yes to my suprise, it was quite quick and easy to just see a new desktop environment (that is Cinnamon) on my KahelOS Desktop.
Here are some of my screenshots after the fresh install (for i still need to do more exploring before i say more about this experience):
To share with you on how i just easily did this. Here’s a short guide below.
1.Installing cinnamon desktop
Make sure that yaourt and pkg-config is installed on your KahelOS, so you can do that by invoking this command.
$sudo pacman -Sy yaourt pkg-config
Once these software is already installed, then install the cinnamon desktop.
$sudo yaourt -S –noconfirm cinnamon
2. Abilitate/ Activate Cinnamon
by simply opening a terminal and launch “dconf-editor”
a pop up will appear, click org–>gnome–>desktop–>session
then change “session-name” value from “gnome to “cinnamon” then close dconf-editor window.
3.Restart your KahelOS, log-in on your desktop and voila! there’s your new desktop environement.
For me, my experimentation tells me that KahelOS with Cinnamon is a combination of awesomeness and speed! I’ll keep you posted.
Be a hero every like Rizal (Philippines’ National Hero) and Wishing you all an Awesome and Prosperous New Year!

Something Different for a Holiday Treat. An Operating System for instance…
Something Different for a Holiday Treat. An Operating System for instance…
By: Jeanina Hanna B. Reburiano
Spending your money wisely is a very important tip this Yultide season and for the rest of the year. Though some people enjoy buying gifts, clothes, food, gadgets, games, and all other stuff that maybe of huge monetary value (who does not?), it may be wise to give as a present something that is useful, lasting and priceless.
Have you thought of giving an Operating System, KahelOS, for that matter as a gift?
Yes, KahelOS… You might be asking, “What the heck is the connection of downloading KahelOS and saving money?!”… Here is an equation to explain this:
Proprietary OS = money + money and + more money to add more apps
Pirated CD OS installer = money + time and effort to buy + hassle in license issues; or
With KahelOS, here’s what it’s going to be:
KahelOS = worth your time and effort + no expense (free) + totally legal to use and copy
Instead of buying pirated versions of operating systems (OS), why not save your money for something else worth buying or donate to a noble cause? KahelOS is free for everyone who wants to try it. All you need is a personal computer or laptop and an internet connection. It’s very easy to download and install! Just go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/kahelos/ and the good news is it’s totally FREE! No need to look for cracked OS in the internet, no need to stress yourself out in looking for license keys that are not yet used. The greater news is that there is a hassle-free automatic installation of KahelOS! Believe it or not, this operating system has these features (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfGt2aud_8c)!
Just a simple tip, my dear friends, either it’s money or headache you’re going to spend… Spend time and money wisely! Use KahelOS! You may visit http://labs.cre8tivetech.com/2011/12/kahelos-111111-release-notes/ for more details.
TweetPre-Installed PHP Development Goodness on KahelOS
Pre-Installed PHP Development Goodness on KahelOS
By: Vedasto Rey Portugal
With the new year just around the corner, I finally found time to sift through and archive the messy old files on my laptop. I can be quite the slob when it comes to my personal files and research materials and cleaning up my one year’s worth of electronic junk is quite the task. Since I’ve also been itching to port my personal development environment to the newest release of KahelOS, I grabbed the opportunity to do so as well.
KahelOS, by the way, is a two-year old Linux distro that pairs Arch Linux’s speed and stability with the beauty and ease of use of a Gnome 3 Desktop. Kahelos 111111 was released just last December 8, 2011, and in just few days, shot up DistroWatch’s top ten list, even dislodging Ubuntu from the second spot at one point.
KahelOS is one of the fastest Linux installations you’ll ever encounter. Mine took only about 15-20 minutes start-to-end. It comes fully-loaded with the usual productivity applications for the modern-day knowledge worker.
Not quite usual, however, and pleasantly so, is the fact that it comes bundled with the LAMP stack.
Yes, you read that right. The Apache HTTP Server,
MySQL and PHP are all bundled with the installation. phpMyAdmin is also pre-installed. That means if I wanted to start a new dynamic web project I could do so right then and there!
To clone my projects from our development server to my laptop I first needed to install Git using PackageKit, which took all of 30 seconds. I always tell new programmers to use a version control system such as Git even if you’re a free lancer working on your own. Not only does it get you into the habit of versioning your code and working in small iterations, but it also prepares you for more collaborative projects later on.
I then used vim to modify the relevant configurations. For KahelOS, those files are:
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/mysql/my.cnf
/etc/php/php.ini
/etc/hosts
I was good to go.
I use vim and gedit for most of my coding. But for those of you who prefer to use something with more boom, another pleasant surprise is that KahelOS also comes bundled with Bluefish, a powerful open source editor made specifically for web developers.
Setting up a PHP development environment has never been this easy. If you’re a web developer who would like to try programming on Linux for the first time, KahelOS is perfect for you. If you’re a PHP veteran and you want to experience coding in a cool desktop environment with a kick-ass, rock-solid base, you should also definitely give KahelOS a spin.
What is KahelOS?
KahelOS is based on Arch Linux.
KahelOS is the first and remains to be the only Filipino Linux Distro with the rolling release model on Arch Linux + GNOME. In the community, it is the first to release (non-beta) such Linux OS on Arch Linux + GNOME.
KahelOS is not just an Operating System so to speak. IT is not just a Technology Product on a Linux and Open Source Platform added to the thousands of FREE Distros already available in the community. IT does not explicitly want to be different or to be set apart from the rest. However, among others, we simply would like Kahel OS (just like our team) to be the embodiment of our IT Values and Philosophy.
It is also a gift and a manifestation of the collaborating Filipino spirit that believes in the competence of the Global IT Community.
As an open source software, KahelOS shall therefore maintain to remain free of charge with an active community to support it.
The term kahel is the Tagalog/ Filipino word for the color or fruit “orange”.
Depicting fun, energy, fresh and flamboyant; KahelOS, its team and community, would like to imbibe the aura and ambiance of warmth and being sociable.
Kahel also signifies hunger or thirst for knowledge and new things as the color orange is a stimulus affecting both mind and body, for doing more activities, having the appetite and socialization.
